With the beginning of summer on our hands, it is time to pay special attention to our summer eye care.  First and foremost, it is crucial to keep sunglasses on during those hot and sunny days in order to protect the eyes from ultraviolet damage.  Most if not all sunglasses have uv protection, but it also important to have sunglasses with polarized lenses.

The sun can cause damage to the eyes from simply causing the eyes to become dry and irritated, to causing more serious internal ocular damage such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Besides the damage of the sun to the eyes, we cannot forget about the chlorine which our eyes are exposed to in our swimming pools.  That chlorine can cause a lot of irritation, dryness, and allergies to the eyes.  As far as swimming in lake or sea water, more eye protection with goggles is necessary since that water tends to be more dirty and polluted.  The biggest mistake which people do is swim with their contact lenses on.  Being in pool, lake, or sea water with contact lenses in place you at huge risk for serious eye infections, such as debilitating, painful, and vision-damaging corneal ulcers.

The final thing that we should all be aware of this summer is protecting our skin, whether it is the skin of the face or that of the rest of the body.  Skin creams that have uv blockers are important around the eyes as well the rest of the face and body.  These are just some of the protective measures which we all can take with our summer eye care to help insure  a safe and fun season.
